Ingredient

For the chaat:
  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 1/2 cup boiled chickpeas
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves
  • 1/4 cup sev
  • 1/4 cup pomegranate seeds
  • 1/4 cup tamarind chutney
  • 1/4 cup mint chutney
  • 1/2 tsp roasted cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp chaat masala
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying
For tamarind chutney:
  • 1/2 cup tamarind pulp
  • 1/4 cup jaggery
  • 1/2 tsp roasted cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
For mint chutney:
  • 1 cup fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 cup fresh coriander leaves
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1/2 inch ginger
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Salt to taste

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Frying pan
  • Bowl
  • Blender

Method

1. Wash and peel the sweet potatoes. Cut them into small cubes.
2. Heat oil in a frying pan and fry the sweet potatoes until they turn golden brown.
3. Remove the sweet potatoes from the pan and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
4. In a bowl, mix the fried sweet potatoes, boiled chickpeas, chopped onions, chopped green chili, chopped coriander leaves, and pomegranate seeds.
5. Add salt, roasted cumin powder, chaat masala, and red chili powder. Mix well.
6. To make tamarind chutney, mix tamarind pulp, jaggery, roasted cumin powder, red chili powder, and salt. Add water if needed and cook until it thickens.
7. To make mint chutney, blend mint leaves, coriander leaves, green chilies, ginger, lemon juice, and salt in a blender.
8. To serve, place the chaat mixture in a plate. Add tamarind chutney and mint chutney. Top with sev and serve immediately.

Notes

This recipe can be made vegan by omitting the ghee and using oil for frying.
