Prep Time

10 minutes

Cook Time

20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Equipment

  • Deep fryer or large pot
  • Slotted spoon or spider
  • Baking sheet
  • Paper towels

Method

1. Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into thin, even strips. 2. In a shallow dish, mix together the cornstarch, flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. 3. Coat the sweet potato strips in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess. 4. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or pot to 375°F. 5. Fry the sweet potato strips in batches, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes. 6. Use a slotted spoon or spider to remove the fries from the oil and transfer them to a baking sheet lined with paper towels to drain. 7. Repeat with the remaining sweet potato strips. 8. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Be sure to cut the sweet potato strips into uniform sizes so they cook evenly. You can also soak the cut potatoes in cold water for 30 minutes to remove excess starch and make them even crispier.

Recipe Tips

For a healthier version, you can bake these sweet potato fries instead of frying them. Preheat your oven to 425°F and spread the coated sweet potato strips on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are crispy and golden brown. You can also experiment with different seasonings and spices to customize the flavor of your fries. Enjoy!
